Instagram is a juggernaut social network, particularly among Millennials. If it isn’t a part of your small business video strategy, you’re potentially leaving a lot of money on the table.
But it’s relatively simple to make a number of crucial mistakes on Instagram that can upend your company’s social strategy. Today, we’re going to take a look at five common Instagram mistakes businesses make.
1. Posting Too Often and Too Unreliably
You may think that posting unreliably means that you can’t possibly be also posting too often, but this isn’t true.
Make no mistake—it’s critical to consistently post to Instagram. Your followers want to know they can rely on you to make posts throughout every week (preferably every day). If you’re unreliable and don’t consistently post content, you won’t gain many new followers, and your existing followers will likely lose interest.
But there’s a difference between post consistency and post frequency. While you want to post reliably, you should never make too many posts within a small time frame. This will flood your audience members’ feeds and might turn them off to your brand entirely.
In short, space out your posts!
2. Neglecting to Post Content of Value
You can time the posting of your Instagram photos and videos all you want, but your small business video strategy is dead in the water if you’re not posting valuable content.
It’s incredibly easy to get caught up in “making the sale,” but you need to consider what’s helpful or amusing to the reader—not always what’s helpful to you.Publicity-based posts are great for promoting your business, but you should always feature a healthy dose of fun and informational posts for your audience, too.
3.Not Intelligently Using Hashtags
Hashtags are great for driving traffic to your videos and photos by setting your posts into simple categories that users can search for and discover.
Still, it’s important to be smart about how you use your hashtags. Instagram allows users to utilize up to 30 hashtags per post. As long as you’re choosing hashtags that are relevant to your content, you want to include as many as possible. However, you don’t want to stick a long string of unsightly hashtags directly into your caption. This may turn off viewers and make it difficult to read your content.
Instead, consider placing hashtag clouds within the comments section. Also, check to see what hashtags are trending, and take advantage! 4. Not Using Links to Drive Clicks
Have you included a clickable link in your Instagram bio?
You need to.
If you don’t include a link in your bio, you’re not making full use of Instagram. This is the only spot within your profile to include a clickable link. You may want to link to your website, but keep in mind this is great for linking to special landing pages during time-sensitive campaigns, as well.
Also, always let your viewers know in the post comments to “click the link in your bio!”
5. Not Posting Videos
Finally, we can’t close without noting that while Instagram is a big-time photography platform, you need to be posting videos, too.
As of March 2016, Instagram increased the length of videos substantially. You can now post videos between three to 60 seconds in length.
