We get it…you spent all this money on a website and you don’t even know if it’s really that good, right? So many websites out there to compare yours too. Let us do the hard part and combine all our knowledge right here in what make a successful website.
Content is King! You must have engaging and fresh information and images. The Google Gods love to see you updating your site with new articles, images, videos…anything to keep your site a fresh as the day you launched it. And be absolutely sure all spelling and grammar is correct! Nothing worse to lose the trust of your potential customer by a careless spelling error.
2. Mobile and Tablet Friendly
Mobile and tablet friendliness is the name of the game! Your customer has your business right in their pocket. Google actually penalizes your search rankings if you’re not mobile or tablet friendly. Making that connection has to be as quick and easy as possible. For instance, I just got a flat tire and need to find the best place to buy a tire. No way am I going to the dealership and paying double! I’m driving around with that little spare and need to find something close. I find a tire shop and need directions and a phone number. This mobile site needs to have large, colorful, one touch, click to call and directions. If I have to “pinch and zoom” to be able to click anything, I’m annoyed and finding another tire shop.
3. Easy to Read
Making your pages easy to read is often ignored design feature. Your content is a waste if no one can read it! Black type on white background is the easiest format to read. If you’re changing background colors, try and keep the text black on a light colored area. And let’s talk about the font real quick too. Don’t get so fancy with trying to find a typeface that you love. Keep it simple and consistent throughout the home page and inner pages.
Studies have shown that a single second of loading time on a page can result in a 7% decrease in conversions with 40% of users abandoning the site completely if it takes longer than 3 seconds. People want their information at light speed. They have zero patience, period. Want. Information. Now. So what can help speed up websites? “Caching”, or storing away, information in the user’s browser can certainly help. If you’re re-visiting a website in a reasonable amount of time, there is no reason for their browser to download anything at all. The server can be set to tell the browser that nothing has changed and the page will be loaded from the user’s own computer. And how about those huge, high resolution images you have on the home page? A visitor shouldn’t be forced to download a high res, print ready image of your service or product if you just need to show them a thumbnail.
5. Less is More
It’s a tried and true design feature that has stood the test of time across all forms of media. Less is more! We like to also use the term “curiosity”, which means that if we place less information on the home page the user is like to be curious and scroll over icons and features that will populate drop down menu’s or other features that are space savers. Fight the urge to vomit all your information on the home page. Make that user explore your site and this will lead to more “stickiness” or less bounce rates on the page.
